WHAT IS THE 'BALANCE OF FAMILY' TEST?
This test means that:
- at least half of your children are lawfully and permanently resident in Australia; OR
- more of your children are permanently resident in Australia than in any other single country
Please note: the Department of Immigration and Citizenship will count all natural, adopted and step-children of the applicant, their spouse or former spouse (before or during the former spouse relationship). Children whose whereabouts are unknown are presumed to be in the parent’s home country and are counted in the balance of family test. The purpose of the test is to establish the nature of a parent’s ties to Australia and the support likely to be available from their children in Australia.
